Giving Back to Move Forward Together

$1,000 worth of backpacks and school supplies donated for area kids

Fall is in the air! You can feel it by the slight chill in the early morning. You can see it when you walk through the stores, and you can hear it on the TV with the return of football.

The return of fall also means the beginning of a new school year. The excitement of picking out a new backpack and choosing new folders, binders, and notebooks isn’t so exciting for many families who can’t afford the long list of supplies.

Recently, we were proudly able to donate $1,000 worth of backpacks and school supplies for students just in time for the fall semester. Our donation went to the Goodman Community Center, a local non-profit, that we’ve worked with countless times in the past. The Goodman Community Center

GCC offers various services and activities for the community ranging between their food pantry and fitness center, as well as activities for older adults and the Eastside News (paper). They have something for everyone, which is why we continue to work with them.

This year, the Goodman Community Center set a goal of helping 200 east-side families for the 2022-23 school year, and we were happy to contribute.

We were able to donate a trunk worth of supplies with the help of MCU employees. You see, years ago we collectively decided to allow employees to wear jeans on Wednesdays for $5/month. The money from that initiative goes into a separate fund, and from there we decide how we’d like to give back to the community. This year, we knew we had to help local families and young minds get set up for success by having everything they may need for their education. Especially with this inflation.
