Important Update: New Security Steps Coming to Shared Branching

At Madison Credit Union, your security is our top priority. In partnership with CO-OP Shared Branching, we’re introducing new verification procedures designed to better protect your personal and financial information—especially when you use shared branching services while traveling.

These changes are part of a nationwide effort to fight a growing threat: account takeover.

What Is Account Takeover?

Account takeover occurs when a fraudster gains unauthorized access to a member’s account—often by stealing or manipulating personal information—and uses it to withdraw funds, change account details, or commit other fraudulent activity. According to the Federal Trade Commission, identity theft and account takeover continue to rise each year, with billions lost annually to these types of scams.

CO-OP Shared Branching has responded by implementing IDCheck, a secure identity verification system now required for out-of-state withdrawals, where account takeover is most common, and most vulnerable.

Who does this affect?

These changes only affect those who would like to make an in-person withdrawal at and out-of-state CO-OP Shared Branch. For example, if you have a Wisconsin driver’s license and visit an Illinois shared branch to make a withdrawal, you would need to complete the IDCheck.

There are no additional steps for any other shared branch transactions. All digital transactions, all in-person deposits and withdrawals in the same state as your driver’s license, and in-person deposits out-of-state will functional as usual.

What’s Changing and Why?

To make sure it’s really you accessing your account—and not someone pretending to be—you’ll now use IDCheck to verify your identity before performing certain transactions at shared branches.

IDCheck helps:

  • Confirm your identity using a secure, online platform.

  • Reduce the risk of identity theft and account takeover.

  • Save you time. Members using IDCheck save up to 48% of the time usually spent verifying ID in person.

  • Support tellers. Tellers complete transactions 26% faster with verified IDCheck users.

  • Most importantly, IDCheck has resulted in a 100% decline rate for known fraudulent IDs, including deep fakes and manipulated credentials.

How to Use IDCheck

To get started:

  1. Scan the QR code that will be available in the branch.

Once verified, you won’t need to fill out a form, sign anything, or show your ID in person. Plus, you’ll have the option to save your information for faster access next time.

No Smartphone? No Problem.

If you don’t have a smart device, the credit union staff will be able to help you with an alternative method of verification.
