Become a Board or Committee Volunteer

Have a say in how your credit union is run. As a member-owned financial cooperative, Madison Credit Union relies on engaged members to help guide our future. Whether you are ready for full board service or looking for a lighter commitment, there are several ways to get involved.

Board of Directors

Board members help set the general direction of the credit union and provide oversight of management and operations. The Board is responsible for overall governance and final decision-making regarding the affairs, funds, and records of Madison Credit Union, in accordance with the Credit Union’s Articles and Bylaws.

Members are elected to serve a three-year term, or the remaining term of a previous director.

Board Member Qualifications

  1. Must be a member in good standing with MCU.
  2. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  3. Must be a member of MCU for at least twelve (12) months.
  4. Must be bondable by MCU’s Fidelity Bond Company.
  5. Must authorize a background check and a credit check.

Educational Requirements

Board Members must have a base level of financial understanding consistent with the size and complexity of the credit union. At a minimum, they must be able to read and understand MCU’s balance sheet and income statement.

If these skills are not already developed, MCU will provide the necessary training. Training must be completed within six months of election or appointment.

Required Meetings

  1. Monthly Board Meeting
  2. Annual Meeting of the membership held once per year.
  3. Annual Planning Session: normally a half day planning session on a Friday afternoon in the fall or spring; or a two-hour session following a Board Meeting.
  4. Other assigned committee meetings: meetings vary depending on the specific committee.
  5. Exit reviews by examiners are not required, but attendance is highly recommended.

Commitment Expectations

  • Encouraged, but not required, to attend monthly Board Meetings
  • Participate in select committee work or strategic projects as assigned
  • Attend educational and planning opportunities when available

This role is designed to provide flexibility while preparing interested members for potential future board service.
